Juneteenth 2026: Celebrate Freedom Day at the Lewis

"Juneteenth Brings Balance to America's Celebration of Freedom"

The Reginald F. Lewis Museum invites the community to gather in celebration under a theme inspired by the upcoming exhibition "The Lines We Cross." The day explores how the story of freedom in America has been shaped by the lines we've drawn — and the ones we continue to cross.

Through history, dialogue, and cultural expression, the celebration connects the legacy of emancipation to the ongoing pursuit of equity, inviting visitors to consider how each of us shapes a more inclusive and truthful understanding of freedom.

Freedom Day activities — indoors & outdoors

Justice & Reconciliation: Film Screening & Panel

A film on abolitionist Henry Highland Garnet, Civil War chaplain Harvey Johnson, and the founding of the Brotherhood of Liberty — followed by a panel with filmmaker Xavier Frink, Rev. Alvin C. Hathaway Sr., Dr. Ida Jones, and Dr. Brian Morrison.

Baltimore Miss Juneteenth Pageant

A cultural scholarship competition celebrating young Black girls, history, and heritage — featuring community service, activism, and a live Q&A. Coordinated by Athena Brown (Little Miss Black USA, Jr. 2025).

Musical & Dance Performances

A Richard Smallwood gospel tribute by members of Vision, the Trinidad & Tobago Steel Drum Orchestra, a Juneteenth Jazz Session, plus tap legend Baakari Wilder and choreographer TSU Terry showcasing Baltimore Club dance.

Artmaking Workshops

Design a Freedom tote bag with Art with a Heart — fun for all ages, while supplies last.

Living History Reenactments

Step back in time to meet Maryland abolitionist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, presented by FREED: Female RE-Enactors of Distinction.

Resisting Erasure

A Juneteenth reflection on preserving history, protecting democracy, and expanding opportunity — exploring voting, education, and civic engagement as the ongoing work of freedom.

Food & Local Vendors

Local food vendors will be on site throughout the day, with food available for purchase.
